History

The National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that works directly with the university to assist in fundraising, recruitment and public relations. We develop relationships with current students, graduates, parents and friends of Hampton University.

For over 50 years the Long Island Chapter has been actively promoting Hampton University in the Long Island and Queens communities. Organized in 1954, the Long Island Chapter of the NHAA, Inc. was founded by Eloise and Alton Burnett, Bobbie Croslin, Theodore Bethea, Gertrude Odom, Barbara Fleming, Fred and Lucille Lane,  Thelma Hughes, Louis Childs, Vada Jennings, Ethel Mason, and John Patterson, Sr. with Theodore Croslin as President.

Throughout the years the chapter has "stood on the shoulders" of the charter and early chapter members to continue the ideals set forth in the alumni charter in support of Hampton University. In 1978, the Long Island Chapter was designated as the "Centennial Chapter" as the NHAA, Inc. celebrated 100 years and, considered by many, a model chapter.

Our programs include participating in area College Fairs and working with high school college advisors to recruit students for the University; the Freshman Orientation, a workshop that prepares incoming freshman and parents for campus life and the Hampton experience.  Our High School Day Bus trip gives area high school students and their parents an opportunity to see the campus and experience college life. The chapter also sponsors fundraising events to support our Chapter's Scholarship Fund as well as initiatives set forth by the University.
